How Much Fabric Do You Need for Standard Pillowcases?

Calculate fabric yardage for standard, queen, and king pillowcases with side seams, hem allowances, and French seam allowances.

Reviewed by Sew Measure editorial review on .

Pillowcase fabric planning is a direct rectangular layout calculation based on pillow form dimensions (standard, queen, or king), generous French seam allowances, and a clean-finished 3-to-4-inch turned hem cuff. A standard pillow insert measures 20 inches wide by 26 inches long, but cutting a flat piece of yardage to those exact outer dimensions will result in an uncomfortably tight case that bunches the pillow insert into a stiff log.

Before purchasing cotton or linen yardage, confirm whether you are cutting across standard 44/45-inch quilting cotton or wider 54/60-inch sheeting goods. A single standard pillowcase requires 1 yard of 44-inch fabric (which yields the body and the hem cuff in one continuous piece), while a matching pair of pillowcases requires exactly 2 yards of 44-inch fabric.

Standard pillow form dimensions and cutting formulas

  1. Standard pillow (20 × 26 inches): Cut a single fabric rectangle measuring 42 inches wide by 31 to 32 inches long. When folded in half along the width, this yields a 21-inch wide tube with a 26-inch finished body depth and a 4-inch double-folded decorative hem cuff.
  2. Queen pillow (20 × 30 inches): Cut a rectangle 42 inches wide by 35 to 36 inches long (requiring 1 yard plus 1/8 yard, or 1.125 yards per pillowcase).
  3. King pillow (20 × 36 inches): Cut a rectangle 42 inches wide by 41 to 42 inches long (requiring 1.25 yards per pillowcase).
  4. Account for directional nap or print: If your fabric features a one-way directional print, ensure the print runs perpendicular to the open pillow hem cuff.

Worked example

Suppose you want to sew a matching pair of standard pillowcases (20 × 26 inches finished) using 44-inch wide designer quilting cotton.

The cutting dimensions for each standard pillowcase are:

  • Width across the bolt: 42 inches (comfortably fits across the 44-inch usable width after trimming selvages).
  • Length along the grain: 31.5 inches.

Calculation breakdown for one case:

  • Finished circumference: 20 × 2 = 40 inches.
  • Seam allowance: Add 1 inch total (0.5 inch on each edge, or a clean 1/4-inch followed by 3/8-inch French seam), yielding a cut width of 41 to 42 inches.
  • Finished length: 26 inches.
  • Hem allowance: Add 5 inches (a 4-inch deep turned cuff plus a 1-inch fold-under underlay).
  • Total cut length: 26 + 5 + 0.5 (bottom seam) = 31.5 inches.

For a matching pair:

  • Total length needed = 31.5 × 2 = 63.0 inches = 1.75 yards.
  • Adding a 10% allowance for machine prewashing cotton shrinkage (typically 2 to 3 inches per yard) and squaring cut edges brings the recommended fabric purchase to 2.0 yards.

Verification checklist

  • Confirm actual insert dimensions (standard 20×26, queen 20×30, or king 20×36 inches).
  • Trim off stiff factory selvages before sewing side seams.
  • Prewash and steam-press cotton and linen to eliminate post-sewing shrinkage.
  • Use French seams (wrong sides together at 1/4 inch, trim, then right sides together at 3/8 inch) so no raw fabric edges fray inside the wash.
  • Verify that pillow cuff hems are pressed with a clean 1-inch underlay before topstitching.

Caution

Do not skip prewashing natural fiber fabrics before cutting pillowcases. Cotton percale, quilting cotton, and pure linen shrink between 3% and 7% on their first warm wash cycle. If you cut an unwashed 20×26-inch pillowcase without generous ease, the laundered case will shrink below 19×25 inches, crushing the pillow form and making it impossible to insert smoothly.

Sources and derivation

Dimensional standards derive from the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) standard bed pillow size classifications. Seam allowances and French seam construction methods follow standard apparel and home decor sewing trade practices. Compare calculations with our cushion cover calculator and review seam allowances in the seam and hem allowance reference.
