How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Boxed-Bottom Tote Bag?

Calculate cut dimensions, corner cutout depths, lining yardage, and webbing handle lengths for custom boxed-bottom tote bags.

A boxed-bottom tote bag expands a flat 2D pouch into a structured 3D volume capable of standing upright and holding bulky items (such as groceries, laptops, or craft projects). Boxed corners are created either by cutting square notches out of the bottom corners before seaming or by pinching and stitching across the folded bottom corners.

Calculating fabric yardage for a boxed tote requires adding the finished base depth (gusset) to both the width and height cutting dimensions, plus adequate top hem turn-under and seam allowances.

Use the rectangular fabric yardage calculator and fabric width reference chart to determine how outer shell and lining pieces lay out across 44-inch or 54-inch wide canvas bolts.

Core geometric formulas for boxed-bottom bags

1. Flat cut panel dimensions (Single-piece continuous wrap vs Two-piece panels)

For a standard two-piece tote construction (separate front and back panels):

  • Cut Panel Width: Finished Bag Width + Gusset Depth + (2 × Side Seam Allowance)
  • Cut Panel Height: Finished Bag Height + (0.5 × Gusset Depth) + Top Hem Facing Allowance + Bottom Seam Allowance

2. Corner cutout square size

To create a flat bottom with a finished depth of $D$:

  • Square Notch Cutout Dimension: (0.5 × Gusset Depth) × (0.5 × Gusset Depth) measured from the raw cut corner (or from the seam line if seams are stitched first).

3. Handle webbing yardage

  • Length per Handle: Drop Length (10 to 14 in) × 2 + Bottom Support Overlap (6 to 8 in) = 28 to 36 inches per strap.
  • Total webbing order = 2 straps × Length per Handle ÷ 36 yards.

Worked example

Calculate fabric yardage and cutting pieces for a finished 14-inch wide by 15-inch high by 4-inch deep boxed tote bag with a 1.5-inch double-folded top hem and contrasting interior lining using 44-inch wide duck canvas (42 inches usable width):

  1. Step 1: Calculate cut panel dimensions

    • Finished width = 14 inches; Gusset depth = 4 inches.
    • 2 × 0.5 in seam allowance = 1.0 inch.
    • Cut Width: 14 + 4 + 1.0 = 19.0 inches.
    • Finished height = 15 inches; 0.5 × 4 in gusset = 2.0 inches.
    • Top hem allowance (1.5 in double fold) = 3.0 inches; Bottom seam allowance = 0.5 inch.
    • Cut Height: 15 + 2.0 + 3.0 + 0.5 = 20.5 inches.
    • Cut 2 exterior shell panels and 2 lining panels of 19.0 in (width) × 20.5 in (height).
  2. Step 2: Corner cutout notch dimensions

    • Gusset depth = 4.0 inches.
    • Corner notch = 4.0 ÷ 2 = 2.0 inches × 2.0 inches squares cut from the bottom left and bottom right corners of each panel.
  3. Step 3: Fabric bolt layout across 44-inch fabric (42“ usable)

    • Placing two 19-inch panels side-by-side: 19 + 19 = 38 inches ≤ 42 inches usable width.
    • Both exterior panels fit side-by-side inside a single 20.5-inch cut length along the bolt!
    • Add 10% for prewash shrinkage: 20.5 × 1.10 = 22.55 inches (0.63 yard).
    • Order 0.75 yard (27 inches) of exterior canvas and 0.75 yard of interior lining cotton.
    • Handles: 2 straps @ 30 inches = 60 inches (1.75 yards) of 1.25-inch cotton webbing.

Verification checklist

  • Measure laptop or target payload dimensions to ensure finished width and gusset accommodate contents.
  • Mark and cut corner notch squares accurately using a clear acrylic quilting ruler and rotary blade.
  • Sew bottom and side seams with reinforced 0.5-inch seam allowances before opening and flattening boxed corners.
  • Align side seam and bottom seam directly on top of each other at the corner point, press seam allowances open, and stitch across.
  • Box the interior lining with the same corner depth, leaving a 4-inch turning gap along the bottom seam.

Caution

Cutting corner notches larger than 0.5 × Gusset Depth will reduce finished bag height and create puckering along side seams. Always double-check measurements before cutting heavyweight canvas.
