How to Measure Usable Fabric Width Before Cutting
Measure the width you can safely cut from a fabric bolt, account for selvages and skew, and carry the usable number into a reliable yardage estimate.

The width printed on a fabric label is a starting point, not automatically the width available for every cut. Selvages can be printed, puckered, or reserved for a pattern instruction. A fabric can also be slightly skewed or narrower at a damaged section. Measuring usable width before you plan rows prevents a calculator from placing a piece in space you cannot really cut.
Lay a representative section flat without stretching it. Identify the two selvages, then mark the inside boundary you intend to avoid. Measure straight across from one usable boundary to the other. Repeat at the top, middle, and lower part of the section. Use the smallest repeatable width when the project depends on a tight fit.
Keep three widths separate
Record the nominal width from the bolt, the measured width across the fabric, and the usable width after selvage and defect exclusions. Do not substitute the nominal number for usable width in a cut-layout calculation. If the fabric has a directional print, also mark whether pieces may rotate; usable width is geometric space, while legal orientation is a separate constraint.
For a home test, fold the fabric selvedge to selvedge and align the grain. If the crosswise edges do not meet evenly, note the skew. A small skew can consume the margin you thought was available. Measure near the actual cut area when the bolt contains a flaw, a color change, or a section that was rolled under tension.
Worked example
The label says 45 inches. You measure 44.5 inches across the fabric in three places. You reserve 0.75 inch at each selvage because the edges are distorted, leaving 43 inches of usable width. A 20-inch piece plus a 23-inch piece fits exactly at 43 inches, but a 20-inch plus 24-inch pairing does not. Entering 45 inches in the calculator would make the second pairing look possible and understate the number of rows.
If a later measurement is 42.5 inches because the bolt is skewed, do not average the two readings to 42.75 inches unless the project deliberately uses both sections. Re-plan using 42.5 inches or cut around the defect. A repeatable conservative width is easier to verify than a hopeful average.
Verification checklist
- Identify both selvages before taking a width measurement.
- Measure across the grain without stretching the fabric.
- Check at more than one location on the bolt.
- Record any skew, holes, stains, or printed edge that will be excluded.
- Use the smallest repeatable usable width for tight layouts.
- Mark whether nap, grain, stripes, or motifs prohibit rotation.
- Recalculate if the seller sends a different bolt or dye lot.
Caution
Usable width is not a promise that every piece will nest perfectly. Curves, fold lines, matching points, and a pattern’s cutting diagram still control the cut. When the layout has less than an inch of spare width, create a paper or full-size test before cutting valuable fabric.
