How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Bolster Pillow?

Calculate cylinder body wraps, circular end cap diameters, piping cord lengths, and seam allowances for round bolster cushions.

A cylindrical bolster pillow or yoga roll requires distinct geometric calculations compared to flat box cushions. Because a bolster combines a rectangular body tube with two circular end faces, calculating fabric yardage requires solving for the circumference of the cylinder body plus the diameter of the end disks, plus adequate seam and zipper allowances.

Use the cushion cover calculator and fabric width reference chart to determine how the rectangular body wrap and round end caps lay out efficiently across 44-inch or 54-inch wide upholstery bolts.

Core geometric formulas for bolster pillows

1. Rectangular body cut dimensions

To wrap cleanly around a cylindrical bolster insert without sagging:

  • Body Cut Length: Insert Length + (2 × Seam Allowance)
  • Body Cut Width (Circumference): (π × Insert Diameter) + (2 × Seam Allowance) (Where π ≈ 3.1416. Standard upholstery seam allowance = 0.5 inch / 1.3 cm).

2. Circular end cap cut diameter

  • End Cap Cut Diameter: Insert Diameter + (2 × Seam Allowance) (Two identical circle pieces are required).

3. Piping cord and bias strip length

If adding decorative corded piping to both circular ends and the length seam:

  • Piping Length = (2 × π × Insert Diameter) + Insert Length + 4 inches (join overlap)

Worked example

Calculate total cut pieces and fabric purchasing yardage for a standard 8-inch diameter by 24-inch long cylinder bolster pillow using 54-inch wide home décor fabric (52 inches usable width):

  1. Step 1: Calculate rectangular body wrap dimensions

    • Body length = 24 in + (2 × 0.5 in seam allowance) = 25.0 inches.
    • Body circumference = (3.1416 × 8 in) + (2 × 0.5 in seam allowance) = 25.13 + 1.0 = 26.13 inches (round to 26 1/8 inches).
    • Rectangular body cut piece = 25 in (length) × 26 1/8 in (width).
  2. Step 2: Calculate circular end caps

    • End cap diameter = 8 in + (2 × 0.5 in) = 9.0 inches.
    • Cut 2 circle pieces of 9.0 inches diameter.
  3. Step 3: Bolt layout across 54-inch wide fabric (52“ usable)

    • Top section of yardage: Place 25“ × 26 1/8“ body wrap on left half of width.
    • Right half of width (52“ − 26 1/8“ = 25 7/8“ available width): Nest both 9-inch circle end caps side-by-side (9" + 9" = 18" ≤ 25 7/8").
    • Both the entire body wrap and both circular end caps fit cleanly inside a single 25-inch cut length along the bolt!
  4. Step 4: Total purchasing yardage

    • Net cut length = 25 inches.
    • Add 10% for bias piping strips and prewash squaring: 25 × 1.10 = 27.5 inches.
    • 27.5 ÷ 36 = 0.76 yards.
    • Order 1.00 yard (36 inches) of 54-inch fabric. (For 44-inch fabric, order 1.25 yards to accommodate circular end caps stacked below the body).

Verification checklist

  • Measure insert circumference directly with a flexible tape measure to account for high-density foam compression.
  • Stay-stitch circular end cap perimeters 3/8 inch from raw edge to prevent bias stretching when attaching to the body tube.
  • Clip small 1/8-inch notches into the body tube seam allowance at 1/4 intervals to distribute fullness evenly around circular end seams.
  • Install a continuous zipper along the long straight body seam, extending 2 inches onto one circular end for easy foam insertion.

Caution

Cutting circular ends with scissors on slippery fabrics can cause egg-shaped distortion. Pin a rigid cardboard 9-inch circle template to the fabric and cut with a 45mm rotary cutter.
