How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Round Tablecloth?
Calculate cut circle diameters, drop lengths, side seam panel piecing, and narrow rolled hem allowances for custom round tablecloths.

Sewing a custom round tablecloth transforms a standard dining, patio, or banquet table, but cutting a large circle out of flat fabric bolts presents a geometric width challenge. Because most home décor and apparel fabrics measure 44 inches or 54 inches wide, any round table with a diameter greater than 36 inches requires piecing multiple fabric widths together with vertical seams to create a single seamless-looking circular drape.
Use the fabric width reference chart to verify usable bolt width between selvages (typically 52 inches usable on a 54-inch linen bolt). Calculating yardage by measuring only the table diameter without adding side drop lengths and seam allowances causes you to cut a tablecloth that stops short of the table rim.
Circular cut diameter formula
Calculate the total flat cut fabric circle diameter before piecing:
Cut Diameter = Table Diameter + (2 × Drop Length) + (2 × Hem Allowance)
- Casual dining drop: 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) above the diner’s lap.
- Formal floor-length drop: 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) down to 1 inch above the floor.
- Hem allowance: Add 1 inch (2.5 cm) total for a narrow 1/4-inch double-folded rolled hem, or 0.5 inch for bias tape binding.
3-Panel balanced piecing layout math
To avoid an unsightly seam running straight down the center of the tabletop, professional drapery and upholstery standards use a 3-panel balanced piecing layout:
- Center Panel: One full unslit fabric width running down the middle.
- Side Panels: Two equal-width extension wings seamed to the left and right sides of the center panel.
Formula for total purchasing yardage with 54-inch fabric:
- If
Cut Diameter ≤ 52 inches: Buy 1 length (Cut Diameter ÷ 36 yards). - If
52 inches < Cut Diameter ≤ 104 inches: Buy 2 lengths (2 × Cut Diameter ÷ 36 yards). The second length is cut in half lengthwise to create the two side wings.
Worked example: 48-inch round table with a 10-inch drop
Calculate purchasing yardage for a standard 48-inch round dining table with a 10-inch casual overhang drop using 54-inch wide linen fabric (52 inches usable width):
-
Calculate total cut circle diameter:
- Table diameter = 48 inches.
- 2 × 10-inch drop = 20 inches.
- 2 × 1/2-inch double rolled hem = 1 inch.
- Total Cut Diameter =
48 + 20 + 1 = 69 inches.
-
Evaluate fabric bolt coverage:
- Usable fabric width = 52 inches.
- Since
69" > 52", side panel piecing is mandatory. - Center panel width = 52 inches.
- Remaining width needed =
69 − 52 = 17 inchesplus two 1/2-inch seam allowances =18 inches. - Each side wing =
18 ÷ 2 = 9 incheswide. - Both 9-inch side wings easily fit across a second 52-inch width (
9 + 9 = 18" ≤ 52").
-
Compute total yardage:
- Length 1 (Center panel): 69 inches.
- Length 2 (Side wings): 69 inches.
- Total Cut Length =
69 + 69 = 138 inches. - Add 5% prewash shrinkage and squaring allowance:
138 × 1.05 = 144.9 inches. 144.9 ÷ 36 = 4.025 yards.- Order 4.25 yards (4 1/4 yards) of 54-inch fabric.
Verification checklist
- Measure table diameter across two perpendicular axes to ensure table is truly circular.
- Decide on drop length: lap length (8–12“) vs floor length (28–30“).
- Use a 3-panel layout with seams on outer wings; never place a center seam down the dining surface.
- Match fabric grain lines vertically across all three joined panels before cutting the circle.
- Fold pieced square into quadrants and trace the radius arc using a tape measure pivot pin.
- Hem with a narrow 1/4-inch rolled hem or matching bias binding to prevent circular edge rippling.
Caution
Circle edges cut across bias grain stretch easily under tension. Stay-stitch 1/4 inch from the raw edge immediately after cutting to prevent wavy hems.
